Today is Fat Tuesday...or as I like to call it...Tuesday. Yep, not a real popular Holiday in this country unless you're in New Orleans...or on South Street ten or more years ago. I know, for the religious among us, it's supposed to be a day of feast before a period of fasting but, just like Saint Patrick's Day is supposed to be a day commemorating an actual Irish Saint...it's really just another excuse to go out drinking on a week night (and eat pancakes - although, in all honesty, who really needs an excuse to eat pancakes? Am I right?). Anyway, I spent a good portion of my Mardi Gras in the Verizon store this afternoon trying to get a new phone to replace the piece o' crap they sold me this past September that just STOPPED WORKING...for the SECOND TIME since I've owned it. And even though they had an exact replacement copy of my phone right there in their own inventory, I need to wait for mine to be shipped to my house so I can then ship them back my broken one - why?? Would it not make more sense for them to swap phones for me right there in the store so they can send the broken one back and receive a new one for stock...which, in turn, would send the customer (me) out the door happy and not tied to a useless phone for 2 more days? Am I missing something?? For those that know me this may be a little hard to believe but...I may have been just a little pissed off when I left. Good thing it's Fat Tuesday and I can go drinkin'!!!

It's Valentine's Day folks - but since most of you (and by "you", I mean the Fellas) probably procrastinated all month and will be running around all day trying to get something nice for your significant other...you won't be reading this til tomorrow. So... - It's the day after Valentine's Day folks...I hope everyone had an enjoyable evening with your Sweetheart. Since "The Day of All Things Heart-Shaped" fell on a Tuesday this year, I'm sure many of you celebrated on Sunday instead. I also hope that none of the guys out there fell into the trap of thinking that, just because you took her to dinner on Sunday, you were completely off the hook for a card and flowers today...I mean yesterday. Yep, that's a rookie mistake...but, you know the old saying, "bad decisions make for good stories"...and nights on the couch. Guys just aren't wired to think ahead when it comes to special occasions...or much of anything else for that matter - the fact that the cup was in use, in Hockey, about 100 years before the helmet was, pretty much tells you all you need to know about which head does the thinking a lot of the time. It's okay though...with age comes wisdom (and, as it turns out, an increasing difficulty deciphering between hunger and boredom - but I digress) and eventually the rookie turns into a cagey veteran with the knowledge to avoid obvious missteps. In other news, Whitney Houston Died...not sure if you heard (the "sarcasm" font on my Mac isn't working so I hope you were still able to pick up on it). Yeah, I think many saw this coming for a long time - she had kinda become another Anna Nicole Smith...except skinny...and with talent. I know the past ten years, or so, she looked a hot-mess but...back in 1987, when I was 15...boy, lemmie tell ya, I woulda kicked a grown man's ass in front of his own mama for chance to talk to her!! She'd have been powerless against my charm too...what with my perfectly feathered hair, peach-fuzz just-stache, and scarecrow-like physique - putty in my hands. Rest in peace Whitney. Okay, that's all for now.

Congratulations Giants fans...and you're welcome. Congrats for having a team come through again when it counted most...and for having a QB that has proven to everyone that he is among the elite (even though even most of you didn't believe it for a long time either). You're welcome because, as an Eagles fan, I'd like to point out that, were it not for the pathetic start to my squad's season, their maddening ability to blow 4th quarter leads, and their inability to win just ONE MORE GAME...Big Blue wouldn't have even made the playoffs. Consider it a gift from the Eagles...and given their league leading number of turnovers this season, it's obvious they were in a giving mood all year. In fact, looking at their head-to-head record this year, it appears that the Flyers are feeling rather generous toward the Rangers too...or any other team that they end up in an overtime-shootout with for that matter. Good thing I don't let things like this bother me anymore ) The Sixers are tough and have turned into a really nice surprise this year but...c'mon, they can't hang with the best teams in the East. In the NBA, above all other pro sports, you need a Batman and a Robin on your roster (or at the very least, just a Batman) to have a realistic chance of winning anything - the Sixers have a bunch of Robins...and that's not enough in the end. Anyway, enjoy the Championship in the New York sector of DDS-Nation...and please try to keep the ball-busting to an acceptable level when next we visit - just kidding, you can pile on as hard as you like...we can take it.

Vacation is over and it's back to slaving-away on stage (our life is so hard ) ). One of the great mysteries of the world has got to be how, at the beginning of a vacation, it seems like you have so much time to do all kinds of cool stuff...and at the end, you look back, having done almost none of said cool stuff, and wonder where all that time went - another great mystery of the world is how the hell you're supposed to fold a fitted sheet...but that's a topic for another time. I was hoping when vacation was over I was going to feel fresh, well-rested, and recharged...and, for the most part, I do. But I gotta tell ya, as I sit here preparing for the final two months of my 30s...I can't remember the last time I went through a day when I haven't felt, at least, kinda tired. I guess it just comes with getting older. Remember all the times when you were young and you didn't want to take your naps? Wouldn't it be great if we could have banked them at the time so we could use them now during adulthood? Like if parents could have set up Nap Accounts for us when we were children that would've earned interest over the years...so by the time we turn 40 the account would hit maturity and be worth twice as many naps as when the account was set up!! Aw man...that would be so bad-ass. Of course, with the economy the way it is now, we all would have probably lost significant value on our naps - a 30 minute nap from, say 1978 would probably only be worth about 17 minutes today. Oh well, such is life. Anyway, we are back and ready to ROCK!!! Now I gotta go lay down.

1/9/2012

Forgive me if there are any mistakes or typos in this entry...it's difficult to type from the "Tebow Pose". How 'bout that kid huh? I know they say that God loves everyone equally but...c'mon...he must love Tim just a little more equally than everyone else right? And why shouldn't he?...Hell, (I mean Heck...sorry Tim) I love the kid and I didn't even have a hand in creating him (God does have hands right?...Oh yeah, "created in his likeness" etc. etc.). Anyway, what I don't understand is how much Tebow-hate there is out there. My favorite local sports-talk radio host, for instance, speaks of Tebow with such vitriol, that it's actually insulting to my intelligence when he tries to claim that he doesn't hate the kid - even though he, not only admits that it "annoys him" when he wins, but he can't even give any credit to the kid when he does win...he just continues to endlessly point out his short-comings and gleefully bring up his 3 game losing-skid at the end of the season (while completely ignoring his 6 or 7 game win-streak prior - as if no other QB has ever lost 3 games in a row) and says things like "I guarantee any success he has will be temporary" or "I just don't get why so many people like him and want to see him do well - why does anyone care?". To say you "don't get" why people like this kid, is to say you "don't get" why people like Rocky, Hoosiers, or Rudy. And to say that he's not an underdog because he was such a great collegiate player (which is another one of this host's rants) is being a revisionist historian - even when he was setting records and winning championships and Heisman Trophies at Florida, everyone said his skills would never translate to the next level (unless he was willing to change positions to H-back or Tight-end)...in that regard, he has always been an underdog. Look, it's likely that the ride is over this week against The Patriots (but, to be fair, there are only about 3 or 4 teams in the league that would be favored in that match-up) and there is still a better than good chance that he won't be a long-term success at QB in the NFL - but why can't we hope and root for better for this kid...for us (as sports fans) to see something unlikely...for a true Cinderella-story for someone who seems to deserve it? I know the hype can get annoying...but it's not his fault. If you don't like the whole "Tebow Thing", then (as Chris Berman said) you probably don't like Peanut Butter and Jelly. I, for one, love Peanut Butter and Jelly :o)

Another year has passed and a new one has just begun...Happy New Year. It really is amazing how much faster time seems to pass as I get older. As a kid, when I would hear my parents make similar comments about the passage of time, as it relates to age, I always thought they were being overly dramatic - they weren't. I feel like it was just a week or two ago when I was getting amped-up for Fall, football, and Halloween...and now, as I sit here before my computer, our Christmas tree is lying at the curb awaiting pick-up by the trash-man - Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Eve have all passed me by, in blinding-fast succession, as if they were cars on a highway and I was a disabled vehicle pulled-over to the side. Anyway, let's have a brief re-cap of the year that was...

- Winter was very long and very snowy.

- Ducky had a girlfriend...then he didn't...then he sorta did again...then he didn't again...and then???? Whatever.

- Spring was mostly non-existant.

- Miami didn't get the NBA Championship they paid for.

- Bin Laden was killed by U.S. Special Forces.

- Summer was very hot and very wet.

- All Philadelphia teams were/are a huge disappointment - the Phillies were the best team in baseball and still managed to lose in the first round of the playoffs, the Eagles were dubbed "The Dream Team" (by a backup QB for Buffett's sake!!) and finished 8 and 8 (although 5 and 1 in the division - go figure) and missed the playoffs altogether, the Flyers spent a sh*t-ton on money on a "franchise" goalie and still have NO consistency in net (as of this rant, they have given up their lead in the division (and the conference) and blown a 2 to 0 lead to the Rangers to lose "The Winter Classic" 3 to 2), and the Sixers...well, they're still the Sixers.

- I learned to keep my emotions, as they pertain to sports, in check (as you can plainly see).

- The team of Jesus and Tebow have fallen on hard times recently...but hope to finish strong.

- Fall went by really fast - and was also, oddly...snowy.

- Dave was a jerk all year...as he is every year.

- The world did not end.

- There was a hurricane, a tornado, and an earthquake in the Philadelphia area in a span of one week.

- No white Christmas this year.

So, that's that. If all goes well, we'll get another full 12 months in this year...if not, I'll try to put out a post a few days early to cover the "11 months and 21 days that was."

Yes, it's the day after...always a bit of a downer. And the worst part of Christmas is coming up fast...the dismantling of all the decorations ( We don't go quite as big on the Christmas decor as we do on the Halloween stuff but we still do pretty well - somewhere between Clark Griswold's house and Dave Whiteman's (which I picture to be decorated with nothing more than a holiday doormat laying in his entryway that says something dopey like "Reindeer Crossing" on it...and a cheap plastic Christmas tree adorned with off-white, unflavored, sugarless candy canes standing in his living-room (except you know he probably calls it his Parlor or his Drawing-room)).

True be told, since I handle the preparation of the Wolfe house for Halloween, The Wife is actually in charge of getting our home ready for the big Secular-Christmas celebration we observe each year...which consists, mostly, of the two of us drunk on the couch watching movies On-Demand by the light of our fireplace (and twinkle of our Christmas Tree), with brief, yet inconvenient, interruptions to get some exercise in. Anyway, there are still a few more days off for the both of us and, I guess, the season isn't officially over until after the New Year so I really shouldn't get too bummed-out - and hopefully none of the rest of you will either. Besides, before you know it, it'll be December 2012 and Christmas will be here again ) Unless the Mayans are right (

This Sunday many people will be celebrating the birth of a man they've worshiped for most of their lives. For some, becoming a follower was handed down to them by their parents - others "saw the light" later in life...perhaps because of some event that touched them profoundly...or perhaps because they became close with a group of friends who were long-time followers - in effect, making them "recruits". Whatever the path taken by each individual, they have, collectively, become a community based on peace and the love they share for the object of their worship...often gathering by the thousands to show their support and belief in this man. Anyone that knows me knows that I am not a follower. And, although I do respect him and what he represents...I also believe him to be just a man.

I'm speaking, of course, about Jimmy Buffett. Yes folks, Jimmy will be 65 years young on Sunday December 25...and his legions of Parrot Heads will be exchanging gifts by the Buffett Tree before a feast of cheeseburgers, margaritas, and Landshark Lagers - at least that's what I've heard. You didn't think I was talking about the other guy did you?? C'mon, most scholars agree he was probably born sometime between late August and early October...and still others think it may have been sometime in April - but they all agree it was not anytime in December. No, the fact is, the church came up with December 25th because they wanted to lure the masses away from the pagan ritual of honoring the birth of the Sun God (or some such thing) around the same time of year - details, details. Anyway, whatever you're celebrating this up-coming weekend (and whatever your reasons for doing so)...enjoy it!! - God (or Buffett) knows we need as many reasons as we can get to spend time with the ones we love )

Ah, Christmas shopping...it reminds me of how much I love Halloween. I was at the mall earlier today waiting in a line that was so long, you'd have thought they were givin' out the cure for stupid at the other end...and it was moving slower than a herd of three-legged turtles marching through peanut butter. When I finally got to the cashier, she said, with a straight face..."Doesn't being at the mall around Christmas time make you feel happy?" I looked at her in the same way that my wife looks at me when I try to explain to her what a zone coverage-scheme is in football...or the difference between a 67 and a 69 Camaro - and, as I did this, mouth completely agape, I blurted out..."If by happy, you mean hopelessly trapped with no possibility of escape...than yes...I feel happy".

No other words were exchanged between us for the duration of my purchase transaction. I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound like a Scrooge...really I don't - but I cannot take shopping around this time of year!! I know, I know, you're saying (probably out loud too) "Get you're shopping done earlier in the year Dummy!!" Well, you know what?...I'm a guy...that's just not gonna happen. That does it, I'm getting everyone the same thing this year...a "What Would Tebow Do" bracelet!!!
