Below is an optimistic entry from this past summer...feels like a long time ago now. Let's review what has transpired since; Phillies were the best team in baseball all year but lose in the first round of the playoffs to a team that they were better than (and, as of right now, look like they won't even make the playoffs this year), Eagles go 8 and 8 and miss the playoffs altogether while a 9 and 7 rival backs into the playoffs and ends up winning the Superbowl, Flyers super high-priced goalie is a massive disappointment for most of the year and carries the worst GAA and save percentage in the playoffs all the way to a 2nd round loss to a less talented team - good thing his contract is only NINE F*@KING YEARS LONG!! I would comment that the Sixers have an outside shot at earning the honor of losing to the Heat in the semi finals but...I'm done with optimism.

8/1/2011

It's been pretty exciting to be a Philadelphia sports fan recently. Several weeks ago the Flyers picked up Ilya Bryzgalov and Jaromir Jagr while completely revamping the entire team. Then, this past Friday, the Eagles came completely out of nowhere and signed Nnamdi Asomugha right out from under the noses of the Jets and the Cowboys just hours prior to the Phillies announcing that they got Hunter Pence!!! And all this just months after bringing Cliff Lee back to Philly where he belongs. In hopes to keep up with the rest of the franchises that call The City of Brotherly Love home, I hear the Sixers are looking into picking up Moses (not Malone...THE Moses) out of the Israeli League. His outside shot isn't great but they really like his leadership and you should just see him take it to the hole - he parts defenders like...well...you know. The only issue is that he has ten conditions that must be met before he'll sign...and apparently they're written in stone or something - we'll see what happens...his agent can be a real hard-ass. Of course, none of this will matter if these moves don't translate into Championships (ask Heat fans...even getting there isn't good enough) but, for the moment, this sure is a lot of fun. I know, I know, there are many DDS fans from manyother states and most are not Philly fans...and we really do love you all (hell, we even have a traitor in our own ranks - although I'd hate to call John out by name...it's John...his name isJohn...the drummer...he roots for the Yankees and the Steelers...not sure if I've ever mentioned it before). And some of you may feel like I should, occasionally, talk about other teams. So, I just want to re-assure you all that, with the exception of me voicing my disdain for those other teams...that's just not going to happen :o)

There's an app you can get for your I-phone or I-pad called "Ugly Meter Pro". It's gotten a lot of attention recently on The Howard Stern Show (in fact, I think it's now the #1 app out there) when the creator came in a couple times, tested the entire staff, and got into a huge (and hilarious) argument with Ronnie "The Limo Driver" Mund after Ronnie scored a 0 out of 100 on the meter and completely lost his sh*t on the guy on the air. Well, guess what...we downloaded the app this Saturday and tested the entire band and crew before we went on stage!! Now, before I get into any results, I need to give you some perspective - Brad Pitt scores 91 out of 100, Angelina Jolie scored 89, Howard Stern scored 34, Jay Leno is an 11, and Howard's wife Beth is a 92. So, with that in mind...here are the scores for Drop Dead Sexy band and crew; 26, 43, 49, 51, 55, 61, 62, and 65 - this is an average of 51.5 and a median of 51 out of 100...about as average as you can get. By comparison, The Howard Stern show cast average (including Ronnie's 0) was 45.3 with a median of 46 out of a 100. So, although we may not exactly be putting the "sexy" in Drop Dead Sexy, we are, at least, collectively better looking than The Howard Stern Show...for whatever that's worth. I know, you probably think it's lame that I didn't tell you who belongs to each score but...I actually have a better idea. Instead, I'm going to propose a challenge - anyone that can successfully match all band/crew members with their correct score, will receive a drink of their choice on me. Our scores are above and your choices are Scott, Paul, Justin, Ducky, Dave, John, Mick (monitors and lights), and Justin D (front of house sound). I can be approached at any club before the show or between sets to receive your guesses...I'll even give you 2 chances to get it right!! Good luck.

I think I'm still woozy from the Flyers/Penguins series. I mean, in two of the six games the Flyers scored a touchdown and a two point conversion and, in another, the Pens put up a touchdown and a field goal!! What the hell was that about?? I'm pretty sure the Flyers and Pens, in six games, out scored the Phillies and Pirates over the past 15 or so (don't even get me started on the Phillies - everyone got hurt or got old all at the same time!!). I've never seen a playoff round where a goalie had a GAA of over 4.50...and still won!! For the first four games neither goalie looked like they could stop a beach ball if you lobbed it to them...but, in the end, Brys was a little less porous than Fleury and the Orange and Black were able to weather the storm. Good thing too cuz, although the Flyers may not have the goal tending to win another round, at least they beat the most smug team in the NHL...and that's something that even New York and Boston fans can rejoice in. So, now we wait to see who's next up - the Flyers have not shown all year that they can beat the Rangers but...they may not need to if the Boys in Blue can't find a way to win game seven against Ottawa. Look, I know hockey is the least popular sport of the major four (not with me...just in general) and that some of you don't even follow it and, therefore, have no idea what any of the above even means. To you folks, I apologize for this week's subject matter. However, most of you non-hockey fans probably do have friends that follow hockey. And, if you do, chances are you'll actually end up watching some playoff games with those friends. So, just so you folks (like Dave) don't feel like you read this whole thing for nothing...let me offer some useful advice for hockey-viewing with one of your hockey-fan friends (like Me); If you don't understand what's going on and you can't figure out the rules, all you have to do is, politely, keep it to yourself...I'm trying to watch the figgin' game - questions are for the Internet!! I'm just kidding...I'd never watch a game with Dave.

This week we're going to revisit one of my favorite jokes (not sure why I like it so much...I just do) because I think it makes a very important point that needs to be made. I know, I know...last time there was no point at all to it's telling other than to point out that I just really like the joke - but this time is different...so please, pay close attention. It goes like this;

A penguin walks into a bar and asks to the bartender "Do you have any bananas?" The Bartender says "No, this is a bar, I don't have bananas". So, the penguin leaves. The next day, the same penguin walks into the same bar and asks the same bartender "Do you have any bananas?" Again, and somewhat annoyed, the bartender replies "No, like I said yesterday, I don't have any bananas". Disappointed, the penguin leaves. The next day, the same penguin walks into the same bar and asks the same bartender "Do you have any bananas?" This time, the bartender barks back "Look, I told you, I DON'T HAVE ANY BANANAS!! If you come in here and ask me that again, I'm going to NAIL YOUR FEET TO THE FLOOR WHERE YOU STAND!!" Shaken, the penguin leaves. The following day however, the same penguin walks into the same bar and asks the same bartender "Do you have any nails?" Puzzled, the bartender replies "No..." so the penguin asks "Do you have any bananas?"

You may be asking yourself "ok, what's the point this time?" The point is that Penguins are assholes...go Flyers.

Got a late start on this today...a man of my advanced age can only move but so fast after all. Anyway, I hope everyone enjoyed their Easter or Passover as much as Me, Izzy Stradlin (Gun n' Roses guitarist), Steve Howe (Yes guitarist), Biz Markie (rapper), Julian Lennon (singer/song writer and son of John), and Patricia Arquette (actress) enjoyed our birthday on Sunday - actually, I have NO idea if any of them enjoyed our birthday or not...but I sure did!! The Wife went way out of her way to, not only get me a cool new MacBook (which I am using at this very moment to compose this little bit of prose), but to put together a little gathering of friends in the backyard at our home on Sunday - it was a blast (Thanks Honey). And, as you may have guessed, I also got one of those books that tells you what famous people share your birthday - of note, other than those mentioned above, were Ponce De Leon, Paul Gray (late bass player for Slipknot), and Betty Ford...which is especially fitting for the amount of alcohol consumed on the Wolfe premises this past Resurrection Sunday. Speaking of resurrection...the real miracle was that anyone in attendance was able to resurrect themselves up out of bed on Monday - especially since most of my friends have "real jobs" and didn't put-in for the day off. Many a text was sent back and forth, between various friends, sharing our hatred for sunlight on that particular day - but, all agreed it was worth it. Anyway, now that I'm 40, I'm gonna go put on my black socks (with sock-suspenders), slippers, boxers, and robe...chase the neighborhood kids off my lawn and fall asleep in front of the evening news.

This is the last week of my 30's...I'm gonna be 40 next week. It's a little weird I'll admit - I was at the back-end of 29 when I joined this band!! - but, overall...I'm not that phased by it. I certainly don't feel like I've been in DDS for over ten years now (I do, however, feel like Dave has been a pain-in-my-ass for at least twice that long). The best part about my birthday this year, though, is not going to be the "turning 40" part...it's not going to be any of the birthday wishes by friends, family, and/or fans (although I honestly do appreciate the thoughtful sentiments)...and it's not going to be any gifts I my receive (although I honestly really do appreciate all of those too ) ). No, it's going to be the part about what day it happens to fall on this year. Are you ready for it? I'm gonna be 40 on EASTER SUNDAY!!!! Can you believe it?!? Me neither!! Oh, the irony is so thick and delicious that I just want to put chocolate icing on it, stick 40 candles in it, and have my wife and all my friends present it to me for desert whilst singing "Happy Birthday" at the very top of their heathenist lungs (*disclaimer - not all of my friends are heathens...I'm mostly referring to me and my wife*)!!! I guess, when you think about it though...what better day for me to turn 40 than on the celebration of Zombie-Jesus right? I mean c'mon, I LOVE Halloween AND..."Walking Dead" is one of my favorite shows - it fits perfectly. This is actually not the first time in my life that this has happened...but it is the first time I've been old enough to appreciate it so thoroughly. Happy Birthday to Me )

This past weekend was Saint Patrick's Day...which is weird for us in DDS because, for the past several years, we've been playing Parade Day the week beforehand...making it feel as if we have two St. Patty's Days a year. This was great when we were all young but, as time marches on (yes, Scott and I are leading that march) and we all get a little longer in the tooth, it becomes increasingly more difficult to handle (and recover from) such reckless alcoholic consumption. For example, I heard a rumor that Paul was awakened in the wee hours of Sunday morning by, what he was convinced was, a leprechaun standing next to a huge pot of gold at the end of a rainbow...as it turns out, it was just Ducky trying to revive him after he passed out on the street under a gay-pride flag next to an old yellow Pontiac Bonneville up on blocks - but you didn't hear that from me. Did this really happen? Probably not...or probably it did - who the hell knows? I lost track of those two drunkards before my guitars were even in their cases after the show on Saturday!! But since I, myself, (improper grammar intended) didn't start to feel right again until Monday...who am I to cast aspersions? Anyway, fresh off of St. Patrick's Day, we enter into St. Peyton's Day!! Yes sports fans, Payton Manning has made a decision and signed with the Denver Broncos. I'm not sure if the top brass in Denver discussed this with Jesus first, seeing as though this most certainly puts an end to Timmy T's time in the Mile High City, but what's done is done...after all, you can't un-ring a bell right? - or, for you NRA folks...un-pull a trigger? It's actually gonna be fun to see where Tebow ends up in the next couple days though...and I'm still gonna root for him...unless he ends up in the NFC East (other than with the Eagles) - then he's dead to me.

This whole past weekend felt very familiar to me. The entire drive home from Parade Day Saturday (actually it was Sunday morning by then) I kept thinking, "when was the last time I was this tired?" And then I remembered...it was last Parade Day!! So, I went back deep into the DDS archives and fished out the journal/blog-entry-thingy that I posted after the big event last year to do some comparisons. The underlined portions are last year's entry followed by this year's comparison;

Zzzzzzz...oh, sorry. I'm still recovering from this past weekend. Yep, felt much the same this year. It was a perfect storm of beer, music, and sleep deprivation. Also the same. Friday began innocently enough. We all met up for the van ride to Harrisburg for the big rock-show we were putting on at The Hardware Bar out in those parts. This year was actually worse...we played all the way down in Bel Air MD on Friday - we sometimes wonder if our agent owns a map. Everything went off without a hitch as the sounds of rock and roll filled the cool night air in our proud state capital. And since Ducky gave me $20 hush-money, I'm not even gonna tell you that he left two entire bags of props back in his car, which was parked two hours away, and had to send an undisclosed member of our road-crew back to get them - it's a tale many would love to hear but, twenty bucks is twenty bucks...sorry. No "hitches" this year either (but Bel Air is not the capitol of anything as far as I know) and Ducky didn't forget ANYTHING this time!! Anyway, after the "gig" (industry term), we loaded back in the van and drove straight through to Scranton. "To the hotel?" one might ask...oh no, to The Hardware Bar Scranton to load-in and sound-check at 5am!!! That's right, that's how it has to be done on Parade Day (which is one of the biggest St. Patrick's Day celebrations in the country) because by 9am the streets are teaming with people and you can't get a vehicle within a mile of downtown!! This year, load-in was 7 am so we actually did go to the hotel first...but only for about 40 minutes or so. This was just enough time to sit around getting more tired but not quite enough time to actually take a nap. So, sound-check continued until about 6:30am and, I think at some point during, Scott attempted to "pants" (juvenile frat-boy term) Dave in front of the band and all 1 of the staff members that were there at that ungodly hour - but, between the lack of sleep and the Pink Floyd tunes we were jamming on at the time...I could have been hallucinating. This year no one got pantsed and we jammed Van Halen tunes but sound check got cut abruptly short at 8 am cuz one of Scranton's finest threatened to have our van towed if we didn't move it right away. It was fine though cuz I hate loud music at that time of the morning anyway - I pretty much hate everything at that time of the morning. We finally check-in at the hotel around 7am, catch a nap and a shower and head back to the club for our first set at 11am in front of shoulder-to-shoulder people...all dressed in green and not a one feeling any pain. An hour later, we hand the stage over to UUU and Maybe Sunday (who were both great!!) for a set each as we head back to the hotel to try to steal an other hour of sleep. Pretty much all the same except for the times...this year we were in bed by 8:30 am, first set was at 2 pm, and we only handed the stage over to Nowhere Slow (who were terrible) KIDDING!! We love those guys and they were FANTASTIC - even when they let drunk Ducky up on stage to jam with them ) The cycle repeats again at 3pm and 8:30pm until we close the day's festivities with a set from 12 to 1am - only it's not 1am...it's 2am. Damn-you daylight savings!!!! All exactly the same...even the daylight savings part!!! Sufficiently exhausted, we load-up and head back home to sleep in our own beds. The wife and I pass each other at the door for a quick kiss as she heads out to the gym for boot-camp (or some such thing) and I head up to bed for sleep. I awake at 1pm to take the wife to a beer-tasting & restaurant event in the city (cuz Sunday is "Date-Day" for the Wolfes) and am on the road to Atlantic City by 6:30pm to meet up with my "mates" (British term) to rock the Eden Lounge at Harrah's and put a cap on a great week of great shows in front of a LOT of great people. The wife and I even went to the same event this year (although, I think she let me sleep later) but this time I didn't have to run off to a show (since we did the Eden Lounge Sundays in February this year)...so we got drunk and took the train home ) Thanks to all that made it out...we really appreciate it!! That all still stands too!! Oh, That reminds me, zzzzzzzzzzz... Ok, I've had a bit more time to recover this year )
